The institute’s research activities focus on the molecular understanding of pathogen-host interactions. Based on this understanding, we develop and improve prevention strategies for viral and prion infections and seek novel therapeutic approaches for diseases caused by these pathogens.
Our research focuses on persistent pathogens such as prions and on those viruses, which cause chronic diseases like AIDS or chronic viral hepatitis. In addition, we exploit viruses as therapeutic tools and as vaccine vectors.
To translate our findings into prevention and therapeutic strategies, we are joining our forces with the Institute of Virology at the Helmholtz Zentrum München and are closely collaborating with our university hospital „rechts der Isar”.
